In a remarkable display of determination and compassion, Bollington local Paul Stephens has successfully conquered Mount Kilimanjaro, raising an impressive £4,000 for Veterans With Dogs. This extraordinary feat not only challenged Paul physically but also brought significant attention to our charity's vital work.
The Climb
Paul embarked on his gruelling five-day trek to the summit of Africa's highest peak in August, walking between four and seven hours per day.
And on the last day it took Paul seven hours to get to the summit, setting off at midnight, before a breathtaking view at 7am that morning.
Impact on Veterans With Dogs
The funds raised by Paul's incredible effort will directly support our mission at Veterans With Dogs. We specialise in training and providing assistance dogs to veterans grappling with PTSD and other mental health challenges.
These specially trained canine companions offer invaluable support, helping veterans regain independence and improve their quality of life.
Motivation Behind the Mission
Paul's inspiration for this monumental task came from a deeply personal place. This first-hand experience with the struggles faced by veterans fuelled Paul 's desire to make a difference.
Proud partner Jo Stephens said: "I am very proud of him, if I could bottle his self-motivation and sell it, I would be a millionaire," she said.
"It has always been something he has wanted to do, and I feel it is the start of many. He has loved it.
Word from Paul
"Summit night was exceptionally hard. Elite Exped, the guide company I went with were phenomenal.
Reflecting on his achievement, Paul shared, "My initial fundraising goal was only £1000. I kept raising the targets and we've smashed all that. So to raise over four grand is absolutely fantastic.
"Getting to the summit was my favourite moment," he added.
"It was the pinnacle of it all. I met some great people on the trip, that I am pretty certain will be lifelong friends.
"The Tanzanian people are absolutely fantastic.
Looking Ahead
Paul's successful ascent of Kilimanjaro serves as an inspiring example of how individual efforts can make a significant difference. His dedication and the generosity of his supporters will enable us to continue our crucial work, transforming the lives of veterans across the UK.
We at Veterans With Dogs extend our heartfelt gratitude to Paul for his extraordinary fundraising effort. His achievement not only raises much-needed funds but also increases awareness of the challenges faced by veterans and the life-changing support our assistance dogs provide.
Chrissie MacLellan, of Veterans with Dogs said: "Paul has been a fantastic supporter, dug deep, trained hard and we salute him for it!"
"Having raised such an incredible amount for our charity, we are so thankful for his efforts.
